First movie that Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman made together was at the same time the first and the last picture made by the Italian neorealism master in USA. Despite director’s objections and because of American distributor’s pressure, “Stromboli” has been changed a lot in comparison to primary conceptions. The result was the most melodramatic and most “Hollywood” movie in Rossellini’s output. Lithuanian girl Karin (Ingrid Bergman) in order to be able to escape from a refugee camp decides to marry with an accidentally acquainted Italian soldier, Antonio (Mario Vitale). Together they settle down on a volcanic island, a place where Antonio was born. Step by step the island becomes a new kind of prison for Karin. Buffeted by obscure reality of Stromboli as well as hostility of its inhabitants, the woman once more decides to search for freedom.
